Representation-Mediation/Sterotypes

Mediation

Media texts are a construction of reality, and play an important role in the way we view the world.

Reality is therefore subject to mediation which is the process that takes place when a media text’s meaning is created.

When mediation takes place, an institution, individual or even technology comes between the actual event and the audience.

Stereotypes

Media messages have to be communicated quickly which often means relying on stereotypes. Stereotypes work as a kind of shorthand where a word, image or sound will stand for a lot more.

A stereotype is a standardised, usually oversimplified mental picture or attitude towards a person, group, place or event.

Stereotypes act like codes that give audiences a quick, common understanding of a person or group of people—usually relating to their gender, class, ethnicity or race, sexual orientation, social role or occupation.

This clip/advertisement initially portrays the way society reprieves 'girls' and then makes them realise what being a 'girl' actually means. It definitely challenges but also teaches its audience that our minds have been moulded in a way to make being a 'girl' seem like a negative thing, and have pushed ourselves away from the reality. The initial stages of the clip is sadly dominant however as the clip progresses it becomes more alternative.

This commercial has acted as a way to challenge the shorthand (Medhurst) where being a 'girl' is often looked upon as inferior and in my opinion very unrealistic.

EBI/LR= (D+) Use paragraphs :go through this and (in red) identify with // where each new                          paragraph should be.
                       Q4 please re-do in blog.
The task:
For this preliminary production we were given about a two weeks to plan and create a 30 second clip including things like the 180' rule, match on action and also lines of dialogue between two people. We set the scene in a bedroom and worked our way down where the protagonist sat down on a dining table and spoke to her late sister. we ending the clip a blur and the protagonist speaking her mind.

WWW:
Our clip included many of the camera techniques and we had also been able to embed many rules. We included many enigma codes, match on actions aswel as combining it with the narrative in order to create suspense. Additionally We used many shots such as close ups, extreme close ups, medium shots and even long shots in order to identify and suture the roles from the narrative. we kept the 180* rule in mind at all times in order for the production to flow and keep the narrative relevant with each shot. Furthermore the angles were great too as they made a clearer and more broad view of the narrative and what's going on, as well as enhancing the enigma code by only showing certain elements. the use of panning allows the viewer to become more interactive and involved with the scene and the narrative, moreover it allows them to make quick inferences about the narrative without having dialogue. The fact that we kept the camera shot on the clock also reinforces the theme of delusion from the narrative as it steadily paces from the shot.

EBI:
during the production a human error had occurred, we forgot to turn the mic on, however we dealt with the situation in a reasonable manner and did not give up. We needed to make the dialogue scene a bit better. By this i mean that you could not hear the sound of the characters speaking clearly and so it made it quite difficult for the audience to hear the characters speaking. Also, during this scene, when the microphone had turned off and so you couldnt hear anything and so we had to do a voiceover however, in the end this turned out to be okay as it fitted the scence and flowed throughout. In my opinon,  I don’t think the storyboard helped to be honest, but it brought our ideas that little bit to life when planning and we were more motivated to get out and film.
I think we could of made better use of the ‘lighting’ aspect of CLAMPS, but the real life lighting and everyday life shots added a sense of realism to it. We wanted to make the actor aspect of clamps and makeup is very natural- so she is in her pyjamas wearing no make-up. The genre was psychological thriller, and although there was a short range of instrumental sounds available on iTunes I think it suited well.

How is editing used to create drama and tension in the opening scene? (12Marks)

Many aspects of editing create an enigma code and a mood escalating to tension. In particular the opening scene creates tension because as it goes slowly and escalates by getting quicker. This element created in post-production adds an enigma code of tension and anxiousness. The sound of the water outside was played louder than the diagetic sounds inside such as the footsteps which could emphasise the dramatic build up to the climax, in this case the meeting between the two men. Furthermore the extra lighting on the mans face causes us to identify with him as we can see his facial expressions and can relate to his feelings and emotions, this allows us to suture into his role during the narrative

The low key chiaroscuro straight away foreshadows a negative trail of events, this also generates tension in the narrative. As the clip progresses in the opening scene the pace of the camera and movement of the characters was in slow motion, they possible protagonist was slowly followed by the camera creating tension as we would expect something sinister about the narrative and characters however, something unexpected could appear with such sensitive motion.

Dependency Theory

I primarily use the media for things like catching up on news, to contact or socialise with friends and family and also as a means of entertainment however I do not allow the media to consume and take over my own personal views, although it may trigger thoughts. I allow my self to this by baring in mind that when something non-factual is put up into he media it is somebody unique opinion, I respect that but do not always have to agree to it.
I feel we are dependent on the media to convey news from places we are out of reach from, such as things that we may not be able to capture as primary evidence.

Some people are also dependent on social media in forms of controversial topics as a means of entertainment, this could also be trolling or luring the public eye. Russell brand speaks in public about how we should be communicating beyond the media and communicate directly with one another, as its more relevant and necessary he emphasises the fact that we have to engage with each other and be active.

My dependence on the media has definitely changed in the past 10 years because at the age of 6 the only type of media I engaged myself with was 'cbeebies', and now this has greatly escalated.
The link below supports the dependency theory as these children simply cannot live happily without internet access especially when we rely on it on a daily basis.

AUDIENCE theory

HYPODERMIC NEEDLE THEORY:

Playing violent video games for just 20 minutes a day can encourage aggressive behaviour

  • University students were asked to play a violent video game or a driving game over three days

This article relates to the hypodermic needle theory heavily. They claim that playing violent games can provoke violent behaviour, this is backed up by expert opinion by Dr Brad Bushman and experimental research. (heading shown above)

TWO STEP FLOW MODEL:

Jamal Edwards: Amateur film-maker turned multimillionaire

This model suggests that the media is not as influential as people might think it is as humans have enough intellect to make choices and decisions about certain things themselves, and that the media does not control their views, because of our ability to challenge or even agree to different views or perspectives. I certainly do believe in the two step flow model purely because I have personal views and believe that article or parts of the media are somebodies views and i do not always have to agree. However i do also believe that some people in the public rely on some parts of the media such as news papers (guardian/metro) and may be vulnerable because of their reliance.
The YouTube may fit into the two step flow model because some people may have different views on his gaming skills etc. this can be shown in the comments below the clip.
The telegraph article on the most influential tweeters contrasts the two step flow model in many ways however it may fit in to it as people can comment about it as well as re-tweeting it with their own views.

Five influential YouTube could be:
KSI
Ryan higga
smosh
PieDiePie
Jenna Marbles

This could influence peoples views on these singers.
